Conditions of Rental

1. Definitions
The 'renter' includes anyone who signs this Agreement, no other person is permitted to drive the vehicle, The 'vehicle' means the vehicle described in the rental agreement or any other replacement vehicles provided to the renter by Freedom Rent a Car. The term 'damage' refers to any form of accidental damage associated with the vehicle that occurs during the rental period or time the renter is using the vehicle including,
  • damage to any part of the vehicle including tyres, tools, windscreen and accessories,
  • any damage caused by the vehicle to other vehicles and property,
  • any additional costs associated with correcting such damage (eg towing).
    Damage caused by negligent treatment and illegal use of the vehicle is not covered by insurance and 'Freedom Rent a Car' will charge the renter for the full amount of the associated costs.

    2. Age and Licence Requirements
    Our rental fees are for drivers who are 25 years or older and hold a current driver's licence that is printed in English, is recognised in Tasmania and is appropriate for the vehicle being rented. The minimum driver age is 21 years, drivers 21 to 24 years old incur an extra $5 per day.

    3. Kilometres
    Rental fees allow for unlimited kilometres.

    4. Vehicle Return
    Freedom Rent a Car WILL NOT give a refund in the event of the vehicle being returned early. At the end of the rental period the vehicle must be returned to Launceston (unless otherwise agreed) and the vehicle made available for 'Freedom Rent a Car' to take delivery at the time and location stated on the contract. Additional time is charged at $30 per hour.

    5. Additional Costs
    Additional Costs may result from,
    • accidental or negligent damage,
    • re-fuelling,
    • additional charges for late return,
    • cleaning of excessively dirty vehicle,
    • stone chips on the windscreen'
    • any other costs that are the responsibility of the renter.
    It is the duty of the renter to ensure the vehicle is used and parked in a legal and safe manner during the time they are using it. Should any traffic or parking infringements become apparent in the future, the renter's details will be forwarded to the relevant authorities. In the event of 'Freedom Rent a Car' receiving any fines an administration fee equal to, and in addition to the fine, will be deducted from your credit card without prior notice. This cost will be in addition to any insurance excess.

    6. Insurance
    In the event of 'accidental damage' to the vehicle occurring the renter will be required to pay the first $1000 towards correcting any damage. This insurance excess can be reduced to $500 by paying an additional $5 per day or it can be reduced to $100 by paying an additional $10 per day. A $2500 excess will be charged in the event of any of the following, a single vehicle accident, under vehicle damage or overhead damage. The agreed insurance excess will be secured by Freedom Rent a Car in the form of the renter's credit card authorisation.

    7. In Case of the Vehicle Being Damaged.
    Should the vehicle be involved in an accident 'Freedom Rent a Car' and Tasmania Police must be notified immediately. If another vehicle is involved you will need the other driver's name, address and licence number and the vehicle licence plate number. Should the vehicle be returned damaged it is the responsibility of the renter to return the vehicle to the Launceston area with enough time get a quote from a panel beater (smash repairer / auto body shop). 'Freedom Rent a Car' can assist in getting a quote. Should the renter not get a quote or allow time to get a quote they thereby accept the valuation of 'Freedom Rent a Car'. If the renter fails to gain sufficient details of the other driver, the accident will be treated as a single vehicle accident and an additional $2500 excess will apply.

    8. In Case of a Breakdown
    All of our cars are covered by RACT ( 13 11 11 ) breakdown service, however should the renter experience a mechanical failure 'Freedom Rent a Car' must be notified immediately, if possible. Should the renter engage the services of the RACT or any other organisation or business without the approval of 'Freedom Rent a Car' they may be held responsible for the associated costs. Any costs incurred for a 'breakdown service' callout to remedy a problem caused by the renter will be charged to the renter, eg leaving the headlights on.

    9. The Renter's Responsibilities include:
    1. Checking the motor oil and cooling system water levels each morning during the rental period, and maintaining these fluids at the correct levels at all times.
    2. Driving the vehicle on sealed roads only (except within National Parks), in a careful manner and in accordance with the road rules of Tasmania.
    3. Keeping the vehicle clean and to return it in the same condition as it was at the time of pick up. Smoking is not allowed in the vehicle at any time. If the vehicle smells of cigarette smoke after being returned 'Freedom Rent a Car' will deduct $100 from your credit card. Returning the vehicle dirty will make assessing its condition difficult and may result in 'Freedom Rent a Car' finding damage at some time after the vehicles return. Should this occur 'Freedom Rent a Car' will charge an appropriate cleaning.
    4. Locking the vehicle when not attended and to ensure valuables are not left at risk of being stolen. 'Freedom Rent a Car' will not take any responsibility for property being stolen from the vehicle.
    5. Returning the vehicle entails filling fuel tank in the presence of 'Freedom Rent a Car' personnel, regardless of the reading on the fuel gauge.
